Apple Inc. is inviting members of media to an event in San Jose with the words etched “We’ve got a little more to show you.”
The Cupertino PC maker is looking to challenge its rivals Google and Amazon with probably the much rumored iPad mini tablet.
The event is scheduled to take place on October 23 in California Theatre in San Jose, the spokeswoman declined to give any further detail.
Wall Street analysts have been saying it for months now that Apple Inc. is looking to launch a smaller and less expensive tablet version of its popular flagship iPad so it can notch up the challenge a bit with its rivals.
Apple currently doesn’t have a mini tablet whereas Amazon and Google have, so this will be one way of entering the market, no doubt a bit late, but still.
The prices of iPad 2 have dropped and now are starting from $399. The newer version is expected to be sized at 7 – 8 inches and will be priced between $199 and $299.
As Reuters put it “A smaller iPad will directly compete with e-commerce giant Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD tablet and Google’s Nexus 7, both of which have 7-inch screens and are priced at $199. The first Kindle Fire, launched last year, went on to grab about a fifth of the U.S. tablet market.” So clearly Apple is looking for a share in that niche.
Apple launches are some of the hottest events on the tech calendar, scrutinized by fans, investors, the media and industry insiders alike.
